FAQs
Is the Pop-up accommodation permanent?
No - all of the accommodation is temporary and moveable. It will only be in place for the regular camping season and appropriate time before and after to allow for set-up and packdown.
This offering is an extension of the trial of Coastal Retreats and will be reviewed at the end of the 24/25 camping season to determine ongoing suitability.
Why has the Pop-up accommodation been set-up?
The Committee of Management Best-Practice Guidelines state that:
“An appropriate mix of accommodation ensures that the park can provide a high standard of service to a maximum number of visitors”.
“CoM and park managers must ensure that: No more than 15 per cent of total sites are allocated to cabins”.
Not everyone has access to camping equipment. By offering a range of options from unpowered camping to Pop-up accommodation - this faciltitates a wider group of the community who are able to enjoy the reserve.
Many committees across the State that manage camping also offer accommodation in the form of cabins or glamping.
Occupying 8 of the available 168 campsites, this accommodation comprises 4.76% of the total accommodation mix.
Is this an increase in camping or total number of guests staying?
No - the Pop-up accommodation is set-up on existing campsites.
I have previously stayed on these campsites and am disappointed they are now not available.
Unfortunately, to facilitate the Pop-up accommodation some sites must be selected in the process. Many of these sites have been held by the same groups for up to 40-50 years. Noting that the reserve is situated on Crown Land and owned by all Victorians; ensuring a varied range of options to accommodate all types of guests is important to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy the reserve.
Is the accommodation accessible?
Ongoing accessibility options will be considered at the conclusion of the trial as this will need to occur in conjuction with landscaping, amenity block upgrades and beach access upgrades to ensure that the complete offering is accessible.
We are in the process of developing a new Coastal and Marine Management Plan in conjuction with a Camping Masterplan and accessibility will be a key component of both plans.
Is accommodation being implemented for profit?
The Committee is incorporated under the Crown Land Act completely separate from the Shire and Parks Victoria. All money raised from camping and pop-up accommodation is re-invested into the foreshore and going toward environmental management and community engagement projects.
